Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House

Farnsworth windows

I had the opportunity to visit the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois in 2005. The house, designed by architect Mies van der Rohe, is a great example of formal minimalism and clear structural expression. It is basically a glass box within a steel frame, with curtains that can be pulled around the interior perimeter to gain a bit of privacy. There is no hidden space save the radiant flooring and electrical in the limited ceiling and/or floor areas, and of course the bathrooms and utilities concealed in the central core space.
