Fort Macon State Park

Fort Macon State Park, NC

Passages through the fort

On a recent visit to Atlantic Beach, NC , we drove a few miles to the east end of the Bogue Banks to Fort Macon State Park. The main feature of the park is the preserved historical fort, built of massive masonry walls, which served in the civil war, and was decommissioned permanently after its final use during World War II. Entry is free, and around two years ago they built a visitor center adjacent to the fort which houses historical displays, a theater for viewing a film about the history of the fort, and a gift shop - not to mention you are right at the beach so take a stroll on a nice day.
