We've been interested in acquiring a backyard flock for awhile. The motivation was both educational and for the fresh eggs the chickens will eventually produce. We checked out a few backyard chicken set-ups in the tour d' coop a couple of years ago, and finally got around to getting 5 chicks this year. Of course, the next step was to build the coop. I recycled some old wood and windows, bought a handful of supplies, and went to work on the coop, getting most of the functional requirements from Gail Damerow's book "Raising Chickens". The harder part was the run, which I used 1"x2" fencing and tree limbs from a recently downed Bradford Pear. Overall the chicks really seem to like it.
